An amazing plant from the Pumpkin family, combines decorative and useful qualities. It is used for vertical gardening of the garden, to obtain a “vegetable sponge” and in cooking. Climbing stems, powerful, with intensive growth and large lobed leaves. Flowers are yellow-orange, up to 5 cm in diameter. Fruits are cylindrical, smooth, up to 50 cm or more. Young 5-10 day old ovaries are used as a vegetable. The plant is thermophilic, demanding on soil fertility. Grown in a greenhouse or under film shelters on props and trellises. Seedlings are sown in March. Planting in greenhouses – in May-June after 70 cm. The lateral shoots of the plants are pinched and the growth is limited. To obtain a sponge, ripe fruits are cut, dried, peeled off, washed from mucus, seeds are removed, the skeleton is boiled, turned blue and dried in the sun on a string.
