Fennel ordinary (pharmaceutical dill) is a perennial herb with a sweet-spicy taste, pleasant smell, combining the aroma of dill and anise. The root is fusiform, with little branching. The stem is erect, round, with inconspicuous grooves and a bluish bloom, strongly branched above, 2 m high. The leaves are glaucous, dissected into long narrow ones, turning into a grooved petiole at the base. As a spice, fennel is used in salads, vegetable soups, meat and vegetable dishes. In folk medicine, the fruits of fennel are used as a stimulant, and the roots are used as a laxative. Seeds are a good cough suppressant. It is an excellent honey plant. Growing conditions: sowing in early spring. Seeds germinate at 6-8 ° C. Seedlings appear in 12-14 days, they tolerate frosts down to -8 ° С. With the appearance of the first true leaf, the seedlings are thinned out. Care consists in weeding, loosening and fertilizing with mineral fertilizers. Fennel is undemanding to soil. Blooms in the first year. Flowering is extended and lasts from June to August. Fruits ripen in August – early September, ripe ones easily crumble.
