Includes 3 types, common in China, Japan and the Korean Peninsula. In the USSR (mainly in the Caucasus, in the Crimea, Middle Asia), 2 types are cultivated: B. paper [V. papyrifera (L.) Vent.] and less often (in Sukhumi) – B, Kazinoki (V. Kazinoki Sieb, et. Zucc.). The leaves are alternate, polymorphic, usually two-, three-lobed, dentate, with a long petiole and densely pubescent (B. papery) or with a short petiole and glabrous (B. Kazinoki). Flowers with four-part perianths, unisexual: male in threadlike hairy earrings, female – smaller, head-shaped. The inflorescences are inconspicuous. Spherical hairy orange-red infructescences on fleshy thick legs (gynophores) give the trees a decor, look. The districts are light-requiring, relatively drought-resistant, undemanding to the soil. Bear fruit abundantly, form self-seeding, run wild (B. paper in Tbilisi), renewing by root suckers. Easily propagated by cuttings, forms (nodule, lobular) – by grafting on the roots of DOS. species. B. is used in single and group plantings in parks and gardens. B.’s bark contains strong fibers, from which the best grades of paper are produced in Japan, and expensive white clothes in Polynesia.
