A perennial evergreen shrub from the Rosaceae family. Pyracantha is unpretentious and grows well outdoors in mild to temperate regions, and in colder areas as a pot plant or bonsai. Leaves are narrow or broadly oval, evergreen, up to 5 cm in length. The branches are covered with infrequent, but long (up to 2.5 cm) and rather sharp thorns. Flowering occurs in early summer and is so abundant that the flowers (and subsequently the berries) can completely hide the leaves of the plant. Red berries remain on the bush until the end of winter. Pyracanta is unpretentious, drought-resistant and not demanding on the composition of the soil. Prefers semi-shady, windless areas. Adult specimens of the shrub reach 6 meters in height and width. Seeds are sown in autumn or spring in open ground, in the latter case, cold stratification is desirable (seeds are mixed with sand and kept at a low positive temperature). When the plants get stronger, they are planted in a permanent place. After 2-3 years, the pyracantha grows in full force. Used to decorate buildings and create hedges.
