An annual medicinal, spice and essential oil plant from the Umbrella family. The stem is erect, branched, up to 60 cm high, covered with down. Leaves are alternate, long-petiolate, rounded heart-shaped, moderately dissected with a jagged edge. The flowers are small, white, gathered in an umbellate inflorescence. Blooms from June to September. Cold-resistant, prefers sunny areas, sandy loam or loamy soils. The seeds, as well as fresh and dried leaves, harvested before flowering, are used in cooking as a seasoning for meat and fish dishes. For medicinal purposes, seeds are used. Used for diarrhea, with painful menstruation, as an expectorant. Anise tea stimulates milk production in lactating women.
