Fodder Beets form a large (up to 10-14 kg) root crop of various shapes (saccular, oval-conical, cylindrical, spherical) and colors (yellow, white, red, etc.) and a rosette of green leaves used as juicy feed, easily removed due to the fact that two-thirds of the roots are on the surface. Agricultural technology: Fodder beet belongs to early sowing crops. They sow it at a soil temperature of 5-70 C. Row spacing – 45 cm, seed placement 3-4 cm (depending on soil moisture). Seedlings of fodder beets appear in 8-15 days. Germination and swelling of seeds is a very crucial period. During this time, the soil can be compacted and covered with a crust, which prevents delicate sprouts from breaking through. And then the seedlings turn out to be weak, sparse, affected by the rootworm. During the period of growth and development, fodder beets are very responsive to the application of mineral fertilizers. If the main fertilizer has been applied, it is enough to give two additional fertilizing: the first – soon after the breakthrough of the plants, the second – 10-20 days after the first. At the first top dressing, fertilizers should be sealed in the aisles to a depth of 10-12 cm; with the second – 15-16 cm. It is necessary to have time to remove the fodder beets before a steady cooling. Fodder beets are demanding on soil fertility.
